“Why won’t you hold a ball, my friend?” Oswald asked, leaning on the side of the desk. “It’s high time you did such a thing again. You used to enjoy them.”

“My wife handled those affairs,” Benedict said solemnly, addressing Oswald directly. “She is not here to do that anymore.”

“I know.”

Oswald’s voice softened as he offered a sympathetic look. Benedict would always be grateful for Oswald’s friendship after his wife had passed. It was Oswald who had come to see him every day, to check how he was, and to cheer his spirits in any way that he could.
